V0090 - KAIRO:  (aka Pulse)  Although KAIRO would have to be considered more of a psychological thriller than anything else, it's another bizarre yet highly creepy Japanese horror film that deserves to be seen by all fans of the genre. When Michi (Kumiko Aso from THE RING Ø: BIRTHDAY), stops by the apartment of a "missing" co-worker, she's happy to find him in one piece although his strange behavior makes her uneasy - even more so when he commits suicide by hanging himself while she's there to visit him. Unknown to Michi, however, is the fact that a strange cycle of events has been set into motion, a horrifying series of circumstances that will cross the living with the angry spirits of the dead and ultimately come to threaten all mankind. As the townsfolk begin to disappear one by one and the city's population dwindles to zero, Michi, unable to solve the riddle of the mysterious plague that haunts the city, decides the only way to survive is to escape, and along with the help of a college student named Kawashima the two flee to the ocean side, hoping to avoid their fate by way of the sea. As they come to find out, though, escape is not so easy... and to think it all started with a website that asks: "Do you want to see a ghost?" While a bit reminiscent of THE RING and apocalyptic-type films such as The Last Man On Earth and The Omega Man, KAIRO still remains highly original and very creepy and is definitely a must-see for fright fans looking for something a little different; also features an awesome musical score that reminded me of the great 70's-era TV horror films. V0091 - KAKASHI:  Director Norio Tsuruta's follow-up to his smash hit THE RING Ø: BIRTHDAY and although this film is quite different from that piece, the creep factor snags you early on and sticks with you until the very end. KAKASHI is the story of Kaoru (played by Jap. beauty Maho Nonami), a young woman who begins a search for her missing brother after he mysteriously disappears. Her only clue, a love letter found among her brother's belongings written by a recently deceased classmate of hers, leads her to the isolated village of Kozukata, where she immediately discovers that she is an unwanted intruder among the quietly hostile villagers. Unable to leave because of her vehicle abruptly dying on her Kaoru seeks refuge at the house of her old classmate Izumi's parents, who ultimately take her in but not without a bit of hesitation and it is there that she begins her search for her brother. Her stay is anything but pleasant, however, as she begins having terrifying nightmares of a menacing Izumi, but her fear really begins to grow when she discovers the village's plan to hold a bizarre festival in honor of the Kakashi, scarecrow replicas made by the villagers in order to try and resurrect the spirits of their loved ones - by way of a human sacrifice. As Kaoru begins to fear for her life she intensifies her search for her brother so they can leave the village, but when she comes across Izumi's diary she learns of the girl's hatred for her and that she has been lured into a trap with her missing brother used as the bait to bring her in. And as darkness begins to fall on the night of the Kakashi festival, the scarecrow Izumi stands in a field with the other kakashi, waiting to be reborn so that she can take her revenge on Kaoru. V0093 - KILLING  BIRDS,  THE:  Awesome Euro-horror  flick about a group of college students sent out to do a school project conducting some research on a rare type of woodpecker close to extinction. During their trek they meet with their contact, the mysterious - and creepy! - Dr. Brown, who not only gives them vital information pertaining to their research but who also seems to be harboring a dark secret concerning the brutal murders of a nearby family 20 years earlier. Upon resuming their journey the kids are forced to take refuge in the ruins of an old house when they make the horrifying discovery of a mutilated body in an abandoned truck deep in the swamp. Bad mistake! The 'shelter' the students chose to take refuge in turns out to be the very same house in which the slaughtered family came to their bloody ends in two decades ago - only the evil never left! As each student is forced to face the grisly fate that awaits them, the terrifying secret of THE KILLING BIRDS is revealed. Will there be anyone left to learn it? V0094 - LA  BADESSA  DI  CASTRO:  (aka The Abbess Of Castro; The Castro's Abbess)  Directed by genre veteran Armando Crispino, CASTRO ('74), is more of a drama piece and not so much a nun exploitation film, even though it does contain a fair amount of nudity as well as a number of scenes depicting nuns being tortured in a dark dungeon. Similar in plot to THE DIARY OF A CLOISTERED NUN, CASTRO'S story revolves around Elena, the convent's tormented Mother Superior (played by Italian blonde beauty Barbara Bouchet), whose inner conflicts about a former lover keep her from completely fulfilling her duties to the convent and to God himself. As the city around the convent is dying from starvation and drought, the abbess's problems are compounded when the church's Archbishop becomes infatuated with her. Infuriated by her rejections, the Bishop becomes even more obsessed with the beautiful Mother Superior until his lust for her becomes uncontrollable and he resorts to using her confession as a means to punish her; believing that torture is the way to open the abbess's eyes, the Bishop forces the naked Elena to wear a vicious strand of thorns while repenting her sins. When that fails the Bishop resorts to using blackmail against the abbess to gain her love, but in a moment of hesitation the Bishop confesses his act of deceit to her. Believing the Bishop's honesty to be a declaration of his true feelings for her, Elena finally relents and submits to his advances; as the two succumb to their passions and make love for the first time, their vow of abstinence is broken and not without consequences. The abbess, now pregnant by her one night spent with the Bishop, is betrayed by another sister, one who wishes to be the Mother Superior herself. As the Inquisition invades the convent to discover the identity of the unborn child's father, Elena is held prisoner while the other nuns are rounded up by soldiers and tortured to confess who the abbess's lover is. As members of one of the countryside's wealthiest families, young Kitty (Bouchet), and her sister Evelyn live in a luxurious castle where as children they learn about a horrifying curse that supposedly takes place every 100 years. The curse, now believed to be nothing more than a silly story by the elder residents of the mansion, claims that many centuries before two feuding sisters - known by the townsfolk as the 'Red Queen' and the 'Black Queen' - lived in the castle until after one fateful night the Black Queen stabbed to death the Red Queen in a jealous fit of rage over a lover. The Black Queen's reign was short-lived, however, as within a year she and all six of the accomplices in her sister's murder were found dead. As time passed, rumors about the Red Queen coming back to take her revenge began to be told, but soon both she and the murders were little more than memories - until 100 years after that first horrifying night seven more 'spiteful' relatives were found dead! And with every 100 years that passed seven more murders occurred, while stories were told about the curse of the Red Queen who stalks the castle halls to seek her vengeance. Now centuries later, Kitty - all grown up to be a beautiful young woman - suffers under her spiteful sister Evelyn's taunts and physical abuse until after one day she, meaning only to defend herself against her sister's assault, kills Evelyn by accident. Fearing public scandal, members of the family bury Evelyn in one of the crypts hidden in the tunnels beneath the castle, then after making sure that Kitty stays hushed they report that Evelyn has gone to a school in America to study. As months go by all is good until the curse is suddenly brought back to life when Kitty's father is found dead one night - and the escaping red-cloaked killer is said to be none other than Evelyn, Kitty's dead sister! Classic and creepy exploitation/suspense flick and as usual with Ms. Bouchet, includes a naughty nudie scene in which Kitty, being blackmailed to keep her 'secret' safe, is attacked and raped by Evelyn's old boyfriend. LEGACY is one of those horror films that are so bad and bizarre that they're actually hard to describe, but then again it was directed by veteran porn director Gerard Damiano (Deep Throat), so what else can I say? At any rate he probably should have stuck to making skin flicks. Sandwiched in between two of his most respected and well-known adult films THE STORY OF JOANNA in '75 and WATERPOWER in '77, LEGACY ('76), is the story of a satanic blood cult whose leader becomes infatuated with a woman married to an outsider. Believing the housewife (Lisa Christian), to be his 'chosen' bride, the cult's leader performs a ceremony that places a curse on the woman designed to lure her into the cult. Things go wrong, however, when another member of the cult - a jealous female believing herself to be the chosen one - shows the cursed woman's husband the way to save his wife from the blood-worshipping fanatics. As you might guess, things don't always work out as planned. Very good quality print with a tiny bit of 'scratching', and in English.  $16.00
