V0132 - RASEN:  (aka The Spiral)  For fans of the RING film series (listed right below), RASEN is the original sequel for the film THE RING, but is less recognized because of the unrelated title. Also, RASEN is a completely different film than the RING 2 film sequel, which does receive most of the recognition as being the true sequel and that's for two main reasons: a) THE RING 2 was directed by original RING director Hideo Nakata, and b) The RING 2 sticks more closely to the theme of the original film, while RASEN follows a different path and ultimately left many fans wondering what the point of this film was. In RASEN, the film introduces a new character, Mitsuo Ando, a grief-stricken pathologist trying to recover from the tragedy of losing his son to a drowning accident. The film begins as Ando, after a failed suicide attempt, is assigned to examine the body of Prof. Takayama (the reporter's ex-husband from the first film), who also happened to be a good friend of Ando's from their college days. While performing the autopsy Ando is plagued with horrifying visions of his dead friend rising, but after the examination he is left with no answers but a bizarre single clue: a tiny piece of paper found in the the Prof.'s stomach with a coded message on it. Unable to make sense of his find Ando begins to investigate and after discovering that Takayama's ex-wife and young son are missing, he learns of the Prof.'s girlfriend; however, when he presses her for information, the tale she tells him is completely unbelievable - that his friend was killed by watching a cursed videotape. Unable to accept the insane story, Ando sets out to discover what really happened to his friend but a bizarre twist of fate during his investigation of an auto accident leads him directly to the videotape itself. Now armed with the evidence needed to discover the truth, Ando sets out to reveal the unanswered mystery behind his friend's death - but a girl named Sadako has a different plan in mind! While many of the original RING fans were unimpressed by this sequel - mainly due to the fact that Sadako, here an evil yet beautiful seductress, just wasn't as scary as the original Sadako - RASEN is still an enjoyable film, and simply presents a different chapter in the RING saga. If you liked the other films in the series, chances are you'll like this one, too. Though there is some brief glitching and lining in the opening scene, the overall quality of the film is very good after. In Jap. w/ Engl. subs.  $16.00

V0133 - THE  RING:   Widely hailed as one of the creepiest foreign horror films to come out in years, director Hideo Nakata's THE RING easily lives up to all expectations and exceeds them by far; it's also probably one of the most original fright flicks to come out in forever. Assigned to cover a local story about the mysterious circumstances surrounding the deaths of some high school kids, a reporter interviews some of the dead students' friends to get some answers. The truth, she discovers, is almost as bizarre as the mystery surrounding the discovered dead bodies: rumors of a bizarre cursed videotape that the dead students had all watched together. According to the stories, any person who watches the video will receive a phone call afterwards (hence, THE RING!), and exactly seven days after watching the video they will be dead. Believing the curse to be silly superstition the four students watched the video and, as promised, exactly one week later all the students were found dead. Using her skills of investigation the reporter backtracks the events of the high school kids until she comes across the missing piece of evidence - the videotape itself. Ignoring the warning she sits down to watch for herself what the students had seen before their tragic end, but is disappointed to find only a short series of disturbing and frightening images. However, her disbelief at the video's silly 'curse' soon turns to terror as immediately after the video ends the phone rings. Now cursed herself the reporter frantically searches for the answers to the background of the videotape, but as the days begin to pass and time starts to run out for her she discovers that the truth behind the video is almost as frightening as the curse itself. A modern horror masterpiece with a classic 'screamer' ending, THE RING is not to be missed. Good quality; in Jap. w/ Engl. subs.  $16.00

V0134 - THE  RING  2:  Sadako returns with a horrifying vengeance!!! And so does director Hideo Nakata with THE RING 2, his shiver-filled, creepy sequel that's every bit as good as the first film, but this time around we find the cursed videotape resurfacing only to become part of a scientific research project. The mysterious disappearance of the reporter from the first film leads the police to believe foul-play is at hand, especially after they discover the dead body of her ex-husband - his face frozen in a horrifying mask of fear - but no answers are to be found. The only clue is hidden inside the bizarre footage that the videotape holds, but to get the information they must watch the video first and curse themselves! What they find when they discover the truth is not quite what they expected - or wanted! Another Japanese horror masterpiece, and another "edge of your seat" shocker ending. V0135 - THE  RING  Ø:  BIRTHDAY:  Helmed this time by accomplished fright-meister Norio Tsuruta (KAKASHI), BIRTHDAY is a prequel to the first two RING entries, chronicling the events leading up to the "birth" of the demonic and vengeful Sadako. In this third installment, we find Sadako as a shy young woman (played by cutie Yukie Nakama), trying to follow in her mother's footsteps of becoming a famous actress, but as of yet she's just a lowly understudy for an acting troupe. However, when the performance of the play's lead actress Aiko begins to suffer due to bizarre  nightmares, she blames it upon the arrival of the mysterious and strange new girl, who she also sees as a potential threat to her own stardom...to no avail; Aiko is found dead a short while later, her face frozen in a grotesque mask of fear. Seeing this as a chance to seduce the young and untested actress, the play's sleazy director gives the lead role to Sadako - much to the dismay of the troupe - and promises to make her a big star, but for a price. Sadako smartly refuses the director's advances, but when the troupe's jealousy of the fledgling actress starts manifesting itself in petty acts of resentment, more mysterious incidents begin to happen. Things take a drastic turn for the worse for Sadako, though, when a nosy reporter shows up looking to dig up some facts on the actress's childhood and some "accidental" deaths that went unsolved. When the director learns of this he attempts to blackmail the young actress, but when a crew member named Toyama - who has also fallen in love with Sadako - overhears the director's threats, he rushes to defend her and the two struggle, resulting in the director's accidental death. Sadako is blamed for the mishap and the troupe of actors, now an angry mob, chase down the frightened actress, but before Toyama can save her she is caught by the frenzied group and viciously clubbed to death. Or so they think! And, as with the first two films, BIRTHDAY features another creepy edge-of-your seat climax that just has to be seen. An awesome follow-up to the first two films with Sadako portrayed this time as a highly sympathetic character - or until the end at least! - with a great performance by Yukie Nakama as the shy and tormented actress. V0136 - THE  RING:  VIRUS:  Korean remake of the original classic THE RING, and while all the important points of the plotline remain the same as in the Japanese film, this version is a little different as to not be a complete carbon copy of the first. If you liked the other films, then this version is a must. Stars Korean beauty Eun-Kyung Shin (UZUMAKI), as Sun-ju the reporter, and directed by Dong-bin Kim. V0138 - SACRIFICE:  (aka Ikenie)  Japanese B-movie - horror style! A low-budget effort about an eclectic yet sadistic gang of thugs hunting down of of their own, a double-crossing gang member who tried to steal a briefcase filled with drugs. Finding him outside an isolated house in the woods, they chase him down and when he's caught they viciously murder him but not before realizing that he was able to stash the load of drugs before they caught him. A sudden movement in the bushes startles the gang and they chase thru the woods only to find a beautiful teenaged girl named Erika picking flowers in the yard of the big house. Believing that she witnessed the murder, the thugs begin assaulting the girl and when her father, hearing his daughter's screams, runs outside to help they begin to beat him as well. The crew soon tires of their mean-spirited fun, however, and eager to be on their way they cut the girl's throat while the father pleads from the side, after which they silence him by pouring acid on his face before heading off back into the woods. Still alive, the grief-stricken father vows revenge on the gang and after burying his daughter's body in the front yard, he begins his ritual for vengeance. A doll-maker by trade, the father's last gift to his daughter for her upcoming birthday was to be a life-sized porcelain recreation of herself - a doll in her own image. The father, who also happens to dabble in the black arts, begins to perform a spell that, when completed properly, will transfer the soul of his murdered daughter into the body of the doll, giving her the ability to seek revenge on her killers. Meanwhile, out in the woods, the gang discovers they no longer have the drugs and they realize that their former partner in crime had to have hidden them either near or inside the house. As the distraught father finishes the spell that will bring his daughter back to life (by killing himself to give her blood, hence the title SACRIFICE), the gang of thugs breaks into the house intent on tearing it apart until the drugs are found. And as they begin to search the house, the life-sized doll opens her eyes and rises from her resting place to seek revenge on her killers! Bizarre horror fun, filled with some cheap but nasty gore effects and mucho nudity! Fair to good quality, and in Jap. w/ Engl. subs.  $16.00

V0139 - SADOMANIA:  Going all the way back to 1980 with this uncut super-sleazy effort, I would have to admit that this is one of my better liked films from that Maestro of Naughty himself - Jess Franco! The film - while about as conventional as a WIP plot can get - actually has some women in it that prison guards wouldn't mind watching over, if you know what I mean. The story starts when a fun-loving couple out joyriding for the day commit a no-no and are caught trespassing where they are clearly not wanted - or at least not the husband, anyway. The husband is quickly tossed off the property but the pretty young wife is taken up to the estate, which unfortunately for her turns out to be a women's prison! There she is kept prisoner while her husband plans to break her out, but unknown to both of them is the fact that this 'prison' is no prison indeed but a clever guise for a white slavery operation - which is headed by the Governor himself and his horny wife, who use and abuse the female prisoners for their own kinky sex games before shipping them off to be sold as sex slaves! Lots of nude beautiful women and even more sleazy situations, including the controversial - and simulated! - 'dog-rape' scene where the Governor and his sassy wife get down while watching a young cutie being violated by a guard dog! Also stars transsexual Ajita Wilson as the amorous yet sadistic head mistress in charge of the prison inmates, and a hilarious cameo by Franco himself as the gay slave trader. Good quality and uncut!  $16.00

V0140 - SALO:  120  DAYS  OF  SODOM:   Although Pasolini's film adaptation of de Sade's novel THE 12 DAYS OF SODOM is full of sadistic cruelty and fetish themes throughout, this film doesn't belong anywhere but here in the horror category. This is one truly brutal film, with a message even more brutal and ultimately, truly terrifying. A Facist party hidden away in a remote mansion in northern Italy captures a group of attractive, young men and women from the local town, using them for the sole purpose of satisfying their own sadistic and perverted desires. The terrified prisoners are degraded, abused, and tortured in all sorts of nasty ways, while being told their only way of escape is a painful death which they are promised will eventually come for all of them. This film is not for the squeamish, as some scenes in the movie come very close to being downright disgusting and revolting. But, in all fairness, it's also considered a classic, while some circles even consider it required viewing. Order it now, but be prepared . . . there's no happy endings here!!! Excellent quality and uncut; in Italian w/ English subs.  $16.00

V0141 - SASORI  IN  USA:  Probably the first Jap. WIP (women in prison), film I've ever seen, but a pretty damn good one at that. Framed for the murder of her lover Jiro, pretty Nami is found guilty by a jury and sentenced to become another casualty of the American penal system. Once inside Nami vows revenge on the people who framed her, but immediately makes enemies by bumping heads with the warden's #1 bitch. After an attempt on her life Nami plans a daring escape, promising to bring with her the only friend that she's made inside, a blind Jap. woman sentenced to life in prison for stabbing the man who shot her boyfriend. After releasing all the women from their cells Nami begins a riot, after which she and her friend are able to escape in the confusion, and after a dangerous trek thru the deadly desert (which they both almost die from), Nami and her friend find civilization again where they take shelter at the house of her murdered lover's brother. Hoping that he can help her learn the clues to discover who framed her, he instead tells Nami some disturbing info he discovered while she was inside, namely that all of Jiro's business enemies are being found murdered. After she learns a little more of the truth Nami begins to question the 'murder' of her lover Jiro, and the identity of the person who framed her: if Jiro was indeed murdered, then why would all his enemies be turning up dead? And as Nami slowly  discovers the shocking truth of who framed her for murder, she decides to teach him that paybacks are a Japanese bitch! Includes all the stuff WIP films are so loved for: sadistic guards; rape; whipping, and, of course, a little lesbianism thrown in for good measure. V0142 - SATAN  RETURNS:  Saturday night Hong Kong madness! Part Terminator, part Devil's Advocate and part Magnum Force, SATAN RETURNS is a cool little hybrid film that almost defies description. When a rash of bizarre cult-like murders - the victims all young women found with their hearts cut out - begin to baffle police, the mystery is soon made clear when a fanatical madman named Judas reveals himself to be the murderer and just what his intentions are - to find and bring back to life the devil's daughter! Seeking out all women born at 6:00 on the 6th of June, Judas, who seems to be an almost unstoppable killing machine with mystical powers, then abducts them and takes them to his hideaway so that he can perform the ritual that will reveal the identity of the devil's daughter; tying them to a large cross he uses a ritual blade to cut out their hearts, believing that when he finds the girl who will live thru the ritual, then the devil's daughter will finally be reborn. However, with each failed sacrifice Judas realizes that time is running out...until he comes across one woman who he knows for sure is the one he's been seeking, a local policewoman named Shou-Ching Chan (played by gorgeous Chingmy Yau, Naked Killer). After failing several attempts to abduct Shou-Ching because of interference from her police partners, Judas finally succeeds in grabbing the woman and brings her to the location where he will wait to perform the unholy full moon ritual on her. And as Shou-Ching's partners race to discover the secret location where Judas has taken their friend, the moon begins to rise signaling that soon it will be time for the killer to cut out another heart. Susannah Whateley, now a grown, young woman, returns home to Dunwich Island after 17 years hoping that she will finally be able to uncover the gruesome truth to what really happened the night her parents were brutally murdered when she was just a very young girl. The secret lies within the abandoned, crumbling old mill where her family used to live but the townsfolk warn her away, claiming that it's a cursed place - the place where Beelzebub lives. Will Susannah live long enough to discover the terrifying truth to what lies behind THE SHUTTERED ROOM? V0146 - SINGAPORE  SLING:  Twisted!!! A bizarre and nightmarish glimpse into the frightening world of a mother and daughter duo, whose perverted sense of reality leaves quite a lot to be desired - even for perverts! Basically nothing more than a very dark and graphically violent reworking of the Otto Preminger classic Laura, SLING is a gut-churning and totally over-the-top film dealing with the wholly twisted and sadistic, incestuous relationship between a mother and her sexy, but equally insane daughter, and the road of destruction it leads them down. Following the fading trail of his missing love Laura, a wandering stranger - Singapore Sling - ends up at the house of the two women and is taken in - only to find out that the answers he needs about his missing lover are all right there. As Sling, now a prisoner of the crazy mother/daughter couple, learns of the tragic events leading up to his missing lover's murder, he realizes that he is next on their list and begins to plot his revenge - but not without suffering himself: tortured near to the point of death, a weakened Sling is finally able to turn the mother and daughter against each other, with tragic consequences for all. Filmed in beautiful b&w and loaded with disturbing imagery, this nasty 'modern classic' (from '92), had everyone's mouth dropping open in shock at the Toronto Film Festival when it first debuted, and it is one film that will be hard for anyone to forget with its heavy scenes of mother/daughter incest, bondage and S/M torture, and a graphically disgusting scene of a woman being gutted - and let's not forget the nasty hunting knife 'strap-on' scene (shades of Seven - oops, that's right . . . this one came out first). A must have! Good quality, and in Engl. w/ some Greek subs and narration.  $16.00

V0147 - SNUFF:  The cult classic that had every body talking (for about 3 seconds!), is back in the house S.T.P. style! This low budget effort from '76, which more or less stole its plot directly from the Tate/Labianca murders, tells the story of a S. American Manson-type cult leader aptly named Satan - almost too cleverly pronounced Say-tahn - who brainwashes a small group of young, pretty women to be his sexslaves and/or assassins to perform his unholy bidding. When sexy Hollywood starlet Terry London arrives in town to start filming her next big hit, one of Satan's evil minions discovers that she's secretly been shacking up with Horace Frank, the playboy son of a local and very wealthy arms dealer. With this new information Satan plots a scheme to create the 'perfect victim' for his sacrifice. Overjoyed at being reunited with her lover, Terry's happiness soon turns to dismay when her bright future is plunged into uncertainty when it's discovered that her producer has been brutally murdered; with no contacts left she is forced to stay with Horace and his womanizing father. Before too long lovestruck Terry is pregnant with Horace's child, and much to Satan's delight he discovers that his ultimate 'plan' of evil has worked beautifully - the time has come to perform the sacrifice! As Satan's busty underlings - wicked daggers in hand - close in on the Frank estate, the unsuspecting hosts and frolicking guests are unaware that their naughty play is about to come crashing to a bloody halt, even more tragically so for the young expecting mother. And, of course, since this is uncut, the twist 'snuff' ending is included, which shows one of the girls in the film crew being butchered and dismembered on the set while one of the camera guys film her being 'murdered' and gutted.  Fair to good quality; in Engl.  $16.00
