V0116 - VERSUS:  In the course of a single afternoon an ages-old battle between the forces of good and evil will be waged in the Forest of Resurrection - with the fate of the entire planet hanging in the balance! Probably one of the most-hyped action/horror flicks to make its way out of Japan since THE RING, director Ryuhei Kitamura's VERSUS is an over-the-top action lover's tour-de-force, combining equal parts Evil Dead, Pulp Fiction and The Matrix to create one helluva wild concoction that genre fans will not want to miss! When a bunch of gun-happy mobsters free an amnesiac prisoner during a routine transfer, all goes according to plan until the prisoner himself - a cool, fear-nothing Dirty Harry-type named Prisoner KSC2-303 - decides he doesn't like his jail breaking buddies any more than the cops who were hauling him and shoots one dead after he sees them mistreating another 'hostage', this one a female brought to the rendezvous point in another car. However, the mayhem really starts when the fallen gangster - quite dead - rises again and attacks one of his own gang members; in the confusion, the prisoner grabs the woman and flees into the woods, while the mobsters try to gun down their undead friend. Unknown to all, though, is the reason for the clandestine meeting to begin with - that is until the man who arranged for the woman and the prisoner to be brought to the Forest of Resurrection shows up himself. Not happy to find that his two 'keys' have escaped into the woods, the man - a seemingly unstoppable centuries-old warlock who seeks to gain new power by opening a mystical portal in the forest - destroys the gangsters only to resurrect them again to create the perfect killing machine: an undead hit squad! And as the prisoner fights off the ghoulish gangsters in order to save the woman's life, he slowly begins to realize that he has done all this before in another lifetime, and that the woman - a reincarnation of a woman he was sworn to protect 500 years earlier - is the key to stopping the evil wizard who plans on using his new power to destroy the world . . . or does he? V0117 - VIJ:  SPIRIT  OF  EVIL:  (aka Viy)  If you're a fan of horror films, then order this movie now! I can't believe I let this one sit on the shelf collecting dust for so long, but now that I've seen it I can say this flick kicks major ass. First, VIJ is a Russian horror film - that's Russian, people! When's the last time you remember seeing one of those, eh? Secondly, it was made back in 1967 - and it still kicks ass! Based on a tale by the early nineteenth century Russian writer Gogol, VIJ is the story of a young - and sometimes troublesome - priest chosen to conduct the final ceremonies for a lovely young woman who recently died from a neighboring town. The deceased girl, discovered to be a witch shortly before her death, is isolated in the church's chapel by her grieving father, in hopes that he can save her immortal soul by having the priest pray over her for three nights. The priest, while unwilling at first, finally accepts the father's promise of a handsome reward and agrees to spend the three nights praying for the dead girl's soul. Come sundown the priest is locked into the chapel with the girl's casket, but not long after he begins his prayers he receives the fright of his life when he sees the woman begin to rise from her coffin. Pleading for God's mercy the priest draws a 'circle of safety' around himself so that the witch cannot harm him, and after repeated attempts by the girl to attack the priest inside the circle, she is finally forced back to her casket when she hears a cock crowing outside. Grateful to have survived the night, the priest's joy is soon shadowed when he realizes he still has two more nights left to pray over the girl! Will the priest save the young woman's soul, or will he fall victim to the sorceress's demonic evil? Creepy and suspenseful, VIJ is loaded with bizarre special fx and stunning visual imagery, and it will definitely be a film that you remember. Stars Romanian beauty Natalya Varley as the witch. V0120 - VISITOR  Q:  The Japanese Fargo! Probably one of the most intelligently depraved foreign films I've seen in my life, this ultra-bizarre black comedy has to be seen to be believed! The plot for this horror/comedy flick centers around the daily misadventures of a not-so-typical 'working' family, and all those who have the misfortune of coming into contact with them. Pulling no punches the film's opening sequence depicts the somewhat bumbling husband/father negotiating prices with a cute little hooker (there's a nasty surprise regarding the whore, but I'll save that for those who order the video!), and after being ridiculed by her for being an 'early bird' the dismayed father heads off to home. However, while waiting for the train, the now-guilty father is knocked over the head by a stranger holding a rock - and so begins the adventure! There is so much madcap mayhem that ensues that it would be impossible to give a complete plot description, but a quick  rundown includes such fun-filled, shocking highlights: a quiet, submissive wife who turns tricks in the afternoon to earn her heroin money; a brooding son who is bullied daily at school only to come home to beat and abuse his mousy mother; the family's 'missing' daughter; the husband's affair with a co-worker that ends - for her - quite disastrously; fireworks; rape; murder; squirting nipples; necrophilia (and vinegar!), and last but not least - the mysterious Visitor Q himself, the guy who starts everything by bashing the husband in the head with the rock! By film's end all the family's dysfunction is happily (and sometimes bloodily!) done away with and all's well that ends well, including the happy, milk-chugging return of the missing daughter! V0121 - VOICES  FROM  BEYOND:  More nasty Fulci horror! An overdue homecoming turns bittersweet for a young woman when she returns only to find out that her miserly father has died under mysterious circumstances. Unable to accept her grieving mother's 'unknown' reason for his passing, she begins to investigate the incidents leading up to his death, which she soon discovers was no accident at all - it was murder! Guided by the voice of her dead father who cries out for justice, she hunts for the identity of her father's murderer while trying not to become the killer's next victim! While VOICES is not as gory as most Fulci stuff that we've all come to love, it does have its creepy moments, including a zombie attack scene and a stomach-churning fried egg/eyeball sequence that will make you look at breakfast in a whole new way. V0123 - WITCH  STORY:  Low-budget occult horror thriller about a group of friends heading out to spend a weekend in a rural farmhouse left to one of the guys as an inheritance. After meeting up with their host - a lovely, young woman named Simone - the group is brought to the farmhouse to begin their stay. As their fun begins, however, mysterious incidents begin to take place, including the eerie appearance of a little girl looking for someone 'to play with'. As night unfolds the bloody history of the house is revealed to the group, but by then it's too late - brutally slaughtered one by one the group is weakened until only a young pair of lovers are left to fight the unseen evil force trying to kill them: the vengeful spirit of a demonic witch burned by the townsfolk decades earlier! Cheesy acting, cheesy gore and HOT chicks - a definite must! In Engl. (w/ Jap. subs), and fair to good quality.  $16.00

V0124 - WITCH  WHO  CAME  FROM  THE  SEA,  THE:  Very obscure and bizarre horror flick from '76 about a woman named Molly who, raped by her father as a young girl, grows up to be haunted by creepy childhood flashbacks which cause her to seduce and viciously castrate and murder the men she makes love with. Unable to deal with the reality of her childhood, Molly creates a fantasy world for herself in which she is a little mermaid and her father is a brave captain "lost at sea" - and in which the viewer only discovers the real meaning of her words after a very disturbing flashback as the film progresses. However, with each murder committed, Molly, in an altered state of mind and not aware of what she's doing, leaves big, bold clues behind for the police to follow until the film's climax in which her distraught boyfriend tries to help her escape the situation the only way she can. Features an early appearance by cult fave George 'Buck' Flower as one of the detectives in pursuit of Molly. Good quality print, and in Engl.  $16.00

A creepy-looking alien with sinister intentions stakes out his territory around a small rural town, using up the locals to take care of those annoying little hunger pains. A group of young people out camping in the woods are the first ones to discover the mean-spirited visitor, and with the help of a crusty, old hunter from town they try to show the alien that they don't like being lunch! Super star-studded cast includes: Jack Palance, Martin Landau as a pyscho Vietnam vet, the unknown cutie - and still unknown! - Tarah Nutter, Neville Brand, and a very young David Caruso (you know - the super-hard ass, but terribly wimpy-looking, carrot-topped copper from NYPD Blue?).
